About
Alex has been developing the base of his techniques for glass art since 2000. Over the years, Alex has studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, Corning Museum, Penland School of Crafts, and the Pittsburgh Center of Glass. In addition to the formal classes at these schools, Alex has traveled around the country learning from various skilled artists through collaboration. Over the years, Alex has displayed his work at various local art fairs and festivals. Recently, Alex was invited to display his art at Art Basel, Art Prize, Burning Man, a solo work release at Illuzion Glass Gallery and now curated solo exhibitions including shows with The Crown Collection, The Chambers Project and Everdream Studios.
Currently Alex is developing a new body of work with the Living Light Sculptures. Inspired by bioluminescent organisms, the extraterrestrial nature of the work evokes a calming and meditative environment. The process is dangerous, laborious, and extremely technical. Assembling boroscillicate glass on this scale can be unpredictable because of the lack of collective knowledge in these fields, a lot of the process is done with trial and error. Alex chooses to frost the finished pieces to enhance the glass’s amazing ability to diffuse light. The pieces are lit from within by LED lights that are programmable and have a wide spectrum of color palettes and patterns. Displays can be custom built to accommodate and accentuate any space.

The UbaTuba Glass App is the interface for direct control of the LED lighting system inside a Living Light Sculpture. It works over bluetooth. As long as the sculpture is plugged in and your iPhone or iPad is close by, the sculpture's name will appear in the list on the main screen. Select it, and easily change the animation patterns. Adjust global brightness and animation speed. You can choose a pre-defined color palette or make your own. Currently available for iOS only.
